One problem with calling professionals in our field instructional designers is people think we should be experts across the design spectrum (e.g., Graphic Design, UI Design, Visual Design, Web Design, etc.) While most instructional design programs have courses on message design and development (where those other design disciples might come into play), most programs tend to just cover the basics of visual design. As a result, we tend to get a lot of our insight from sources such as “The Non-Designer’s Design Book” or presentations such as “A Non-Designer’s Guide to Crafting Beautiful eLearning” Until we (as a field) can do a better job articulating the boundaries of an instructional *designer* versus *developer*, I’m content to use and share resources such as these for all of us who do just enough development work to need some visual design pointers.
